Use of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in scientific writing

The guidance only applies to the writing process alone, and does not explicitly approve the use of AI tools to conceive and design research or analyse and draw insights from data as part of the research process. Formal AI checks may be carried out at any stage or on a case-to-case basis as part of the L-ORIC plagiarism check and technical review.

  • Authors should only use generative artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process to improve readability and language.
  • Authors should carefully review and edit the AI generated text as it can be incorrect, incomplete or biased. Authors are ultimately responsible and accountable for the contents.
  • AI and AI-assisted technologies should not be listed as an author or co-author, or be cited as an author.

Authors must disclose in their manuscript (proposal, synopsis, thesis, journal submission etc.) the use of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process by adding a statement at the end of their manuscript in the core manuscript file, before the References list. The statement should be placed in a new section heading called Declaration on the use of Generative AI and assisted technologies in the writing process.

The author(s) declare the use generative artificial intelligence, specifically (name and version of the AI technology/tool) in the writing of this manuscript and/or in the creation of images, graphics, tables, or their corresponding captions (please specify in all cases where it has been used). After using this tool/service, the author(s) reviewed and edited the content as needed and take(s) full responsibility for the content of the publication.

If generative AI or similar technology has not been used, the following statement should be written:

The authors declare that they have not used any type of generative artificial intelligence for the writing of this manuscript, nor for the creation of images, graphics, tables, or their corresponding captions.
